The Marra Community is holding a Cocktail Ball and local art auction at the end of the month. Their aim is to showcase the creativity and talent of the many artists in the area as well as bring the community together for a fabulous night of entertainment. The event will be used as a fundraising opportunity and the committee have chosen the Black Dog Institute as a particularly relevant organisation for the region. The other part will go to the Marra Hall Trust with the view of having the tennis courts re-surfaced – something they hope will help revive the community spirit in the area.
The committee is made up of some fresh faced gals, a local and another two who are new to the area. This injection of youth has provided new energy and vibrancy back into the town, bringing opportunities, ideas and purpose. Ange MacAlpine, Hannah McKillop and Amy Green are the main driving forces behind the event. The Marra, which is basically in the middle of Warren, Nyngan, Brewarrina and Bourke has no township; the community hub is the local primary school, and Hall. Back in its hey-day, there was a black tie ball held at the Hall annually. This died out as drought took hold of the area and forced many people to sell up, or discouraged sons and daughters from returning to the family farm. Recent years of prosperity have seen this turn around and they are seeking to revive the community spirit and see now as the perfect time to also revive the Ball.
The team are currently calling all makers and artists to get involved and showcase a selection of their works on the night. They are encouraging participating artists to offer their works for sale and are not asking for commission or exhibiting fees. There is an option to donate an item to be auctioned, with proceeds of the auction to be donated to the Black Dog Institute, a national mental health initiative, however this is not compulsory.
“We believe the participation of talented local creative will contribute greatly to the success of the evening and this is all we ask of you.” says Ange MacAlpine.
As well as the range of artworks, the evening will also include live music, a substantial canapé meal, bar facilities, auction & a raffle.
