Penny Evans is a visual artist based in the Northern Rivers, NSW. Her practice is influenced by her Gamilaraay/Gomeroi cultural heritage as well as her own unique and evolving graphic style. Her residency will be focusing on her work with ceramics but Penny’s artistic practice includes collaged mixed media work on paper and film. Sgraffito is a strong feature of the work and links to Gamilaraay traditions of carving into trees, weapons, utensils as well as ground carving for ceremonial purposes, communications, and storytelling. She describes her practice as process driven enquiry informed by time spent in landscape as well as being part of a broader decolonizing process that she has been experiencing over her lifetime which has been spurred on by her continuous art practice.
During her residency, Penny Evans will be delivering workshops for Aboriginal artists. Those interested are invited to complete the form below to register. Travel and accommodation assistance is available within the Outback Arts region.
