Past Projects

Connecting Marks & Country

A 24 week artist in residence with the artist spending 4 weeks in each of the 6 designated towns. Participants were introduced to research material (collected by Curator of Koori History and Culture from The Powerhouse Museum) on traditional and customary forms of artistic expression relevant to their particular indigenous nations in the Outback Arts Region. Workshops were completed in Cobar, Warren and Coonamble in 2009.

The project had a change in delivery in January 2010 and is now being delivered by the Regional Indigenous Cultural Development Officer (RICDO) program in the remaining Shires of Bourke, Brewarrina and Walgett with weekly  workshops  to utilise the research material collected for those Shires. Workshops are currently being carried out within those communities and local schools. Art groups already established by the RICDOs are reaping the benefits of the project as their works have been inspired by the reference ‘marks’ and this can be seen in the finished product. Using the ‘marks’ also gives credibility and forms a drawcard for indigenous art investors as the product is authentic to the region.

Many of the groups have developed further and have moved on from print making to painting and carving. Some groups are ‘carving’ into the paint as their ancestors did and producing amazing results. The project is a great stepping stone for the RICDO program as it provides the foundations for the development of indigenous art and the sharing of resources, within in the Outback Arts region.

The Connecting Marks & Country RAF funded project was completed on the 30th August 2010.
