The 2008

Karla Dickens
Tues 8 – Sat 12 September 2009
Community workshops:
During her 5 day residency contemporary painter and short
listed Parliament of NSW Indigenous Art Prize artist Karla
Dickens will
conduct
hands on workshops
with the emerging artists in the
Indigenous community as well as
schools and youth groups.
She will also be available to meet and speak with people at
the exhibition at various times.
Karla Dickens was born in Sydney without any connection
to her history and aboriginal heritage. The process of
moving from childhood to the present was a colourful and, at
times, destructive journey of self discovery.
Seventeen years ago Karla Dickens found a positive and
creative outlet in her life upon enrolling at Sydney’s
National Art School. Throughout this time, Dickens has
continued to create art, always taking the viewer on her
personal journey - an often confrontational yet always rich
and diverse artistic practise.
After twenty solo exhibitions, over thirty group shows, a
large number of community based projects and various
teaching experience, Dickens has emerged into a successful
and well respected artist.
Karla’s Aboriginality and sexuality do profoundly inform
her work - yet her insight and breadth of artistic practice
both embraces and moves beyond the notion of identity
politics. Her work truly fosters an intra and cross cultural
dialogue through the forum of contemporary art.

Garth Lena Tues 25 – Sat 29
September 2009
Community workshops: During his 5 day residency contemporary
sculptor and short listed Parliament of
NSW Indigenous Art Prize artist Garth Lena will
conduct hands on workshops with the
emerging artists in the Indigenous community
as well as schools
and youth groups.
He
will also be available to meet and speak with people at the
exhibition at various times.
Garth was born in 1967 and is a member of the Bundjalung
tribe. He resides in Fingal Head, Northern NSW.
Garth’s ancestry is that of Aboriginal and South Sea
Islander. His art reflects his origins but is not restricted
by it. Garth’s cultural mix provides much of the inspiration
for his art but his interest is in modern interpretations
rather than traditional forms.
His studies include an Aboriginal Arts and Culture
Certificate from Kingscliff T.A.F.E., a Fine Arts
Certificate Level IV from Murwillumbah T.A.F.E. and a
Ceramics Certificate Level III from Murwillumbah T.A.F.E.
“I hope my art will make a contribution to creating a strong
and free cultural future for all.”

How the Project came about…
Outback Arts has worked closely with Museums and Galleries
NSW since late 2007 on accessing and promoting the
exhibition in the far west region after
MGNSW's Cath Fogarty presented the tour opportunity at a
Sydney Regional Arts NSW network meeting. As a region with few
professional exhibiting spaces the far west faces great
challenges in accessing touring exhibitions. In 2008
Outback Arts approached the communities of Brewarrina and
Bourke with the Parliament of NSW Indigenous Art Prize
Exhibition. The Brewarrina Visitor Information Centre
expressed interest and worked closely with Outback Arts and
MGNSW on developing an application for an Incoming Touring
Exhibitions Grant (ITEG). The exhibition proposal for
Brewarrina received the highest level of funding of any
submission in the grant round and will provide access to
regional and remote communities who would otherwise have
little opportunity to view the exhibition. Outback Arts
continues to work with other communities on future
exhibition hosting.
