About Outback Arts

Outback Arts is the peak arts and cultural organisation for the far west region as defined by Regional Arts NSW.  At a local level there are no counterpart organisations or personnel to Outback Arts.

The Outback Arts region is an extremely large geographical area, dotted with small towns, and separated by large distances.

QUICK STATS:

Population: 30,000

Outback Arts has a board structure that is an Executive of our membership base. The board consists of:

- 6 Shire Council Representatives (from contributing shires)

- 2 Aboriginal representatives

- 2 local Arts Council representatives

- 2 other groups with an interest in arts and cultural development eg. tourism, education, regional development, health, museums, cultural heritage, dance groups etc.

The Outback Arts Board is one of 13 Regional Arts Boards (RABs) in the Regional Arts NSW network and is completely volunteer based.

Outback Arts History

Outback Arts is a not for profit arts and cultural development organisation working in the 6 local government areas of Bourke, Brewarrina, Coonamble, Cobar, Walgett and Warren.

Outback Arts receives core funding from ARTS NSW (formerly known as NSW Ministry for the Arts) on an annual basis (triennially applied for) as well as an annual contribution from the local government areas.  This arrangement represents a partnership between the state government and local government in the delivery of arts and cultural outcomes in regional communities.

Outback Arts was incorporated in 1999.

Outback Arts Key Principals

Outback Arts' purpose is to build arts and cultural capacity in this region. Its focus is currently defined through seven key principles, with which it progresses its social and economic objectives.

- defines culture holistically

- effects positive community change through arts and cultural processes

- is responsive to community priorities

- defines community on the basis of common culture, interests, desires and aspirations

- regards diversity and complexity as essential to creativity

- promotes positive and healthy lifestyle by respecting and valuing people, and

- seeks resources from all sectors
