Bourke -
Bourke is a town and
Local
Government Area in the north of NSW. The town is
located approximately 800 kilometres north-west of
Sydney, on the south bank of the
Darling River, which is known as the
Barwon upstream from this point. At the 2006
census, Bourke had a population of 2,413, of whom
815 or 33% identified as
Indigenous Australians.
It was also formerly the largest inland port in the world
for exporting wool on the
Darling River. The countryside around Bourke is
used mainly for
sheep
farming with some irrigated fruit and
cotton crops near the river. Bourke is considered
to represent the edge of the settled agricultural districts
and the gateway to the
Outback which lies north and west of Bourke. This
is reflected in a traditional east coast Australian
expression "back o' Bourke", referring to the
Outback. |

Cobar -
The Cobar Shire is a truly remarkable
part of the world in the accessible NSW outback. Cobar is a
bustling and prosperous town with a mixture of old and
modern buildings, which chronicle Cobar's past 130 years.
Cobar's economy has historically been based on mining and
grazing sheep for wool. |

Coonamble -
Coonamble is a smallish country town in central-western
New South Wales.
It lies along the Castlereagh River, at the western edge of
the Pilliga Scrub district.
It is
essentially a service centre to the largest shire in NSW
(almost 10 000 sq km) which covers the western slopes of the
Warrumbungle Range and the alluvial plains of the
Castlereagh. Wheat, sheep and cattle are the economic
mainstays, though there is a significant horse industry and
a number of famous stud farms. At
the 2001
census, Coonamble
had a population of 2,659. It is the regional hub for
wheat growing and
sheep and
wool. Although
Coonamble had a majority sheep industry in the 1980's to
2000, there has recently been a boom in the Cattle industry. |

Walgett -
Walgett Shire embraces the fertile black soil plains of
northern inland New South Wales. It is a land of
agricultural abundance and the home of opal - Australia's
National Gemstone. It's also a 22,000 square kilometer
playground for the modern day explorer. Our towns and
villages have a proud and fascinating pioneering history,
and our people still have the inventiveness and good humour
of the early pioneers. Come and see Lightning Ridge,
Walgett, or one of the great little villages of Walgett
Shire!! |

Warren
-
Warren
Shire, situated on the banks of the Macquarie River and
located on the Oxley Highway 120kms north west of Dubbo, NSW
is Australia's Wool and Cotton Capital
The Macquarie Marshes, undoubtedly
the most significant wetland complex in Australia, are
located 50 km north of Warren, and are listed on the Ramsar

(240m). Both of these are in a close proximity and are
offshoots of the
Warrumbungle Range, which may be seen in the distance. The
elevation of Warren is 197m and the general slope of the
land is less than 3 degrees. |
