Cine-Dreaming is supported by Outback Arts auspice service.
The Cine-Dreaming project is developed and coordinated by Paul
Stafford and team. Basic support provided by Outback Arts...
Cine-Dreaming is a cine-literacy project (involving
four schools) which aims to create a body of quality
short films from scripts written and filmed by Indigenous
students based on local traditional stories, featuring sets,
backdrops and costumes constructed by students. The
reinterpretation of these stories, seen through a modern
prism, is aimed to reinforce the relevance of Dreamtime
stories to students’ modern experiences and view of the
world.

The stories
will be selected by students and elders after consultation
between the two groups. The stories will be workshopped,
drafted as narratives, adapted into scripts, and rehearsed
as plays. When preparations are complete the scripts, acted
by local students, will be filmed. The films will then be
edited & produced (off-site) and completed films publicly
screened at participating schools as a short film festival.
The primary
outcome will be a film produced by the school students
based on a local traditional story. As part of that
process students will be intensively involved in
social-purpose literacy protocols - narrative writing, script
adaptation, workshopping ideas, revising and rehearsing,
acting, costume & backdrop production. The rationale behind
this is to encourage as many students as possible to be
involved in the production process in order to reinforce
the link between literacy and real world culture outcomes
that students readily embrace - film. Through
participation in the process they will have their direct
participation in the local film project linked to numerous
vocational outcomes, and gain valuable insight and
experience into their potential in that field.
In each of the four participating schools we will
coordinate;
Literacy
workshops; We will liaise with schools, students and
elders and assist them in selecting a local traditional
story to adapt. We then facilitate a narrative writing
workshop to write two stories - the original, traditional
story and a modern interpretation. Working in close
consultation with elders to ensure any changes and
adaptations are acceptable, we will facilitate a script
adaptation of the stories in a student writing workshop.
Filming;
We will take the completed script/s, workshop these with
actors, costume designers and backdrop artists, encouraging
as many students to be involved. We will coordinate
student rehearsals of the script, workshop revisions and
variations. We will provide all film crew and equipment,
and film this script when students rehearsal is complete.
Post-Production; We will edit and produce the films
from a production facility in Bathurst, overseeing all
aspects of post-production. We will burn DVD copies of the
films for schools and archival requirements, and (given
permission from elders, schools and participants) link the
films to school websites via streaming, as well as enter
into relevant student film festivals such as Croc Fest and
Little Big Shots.
