CASP Grants

CASP provides small grants to arts and community organisations, Regional Arts Boards and local arts councils in regional NSW for short term, locally initiated projects. The aims of the program are:

  • to assist locally determined cultural activities;
  • to increase opportunities for regionally based groups to access a diverse range of arts programs;
  • to enable communities to explore and express their cultural identities;
  • to encourage communities to work together to develop and participate in cultural experiences;
  • to bring social and economic benefits to the community through training, employment and promotional activities; and
  • to leads to greater awareness and appreciation of cultural diversity in rural and regional New South Wales.

BOURKE Local Govt Area ($2,250)

Our World through Children’s Eyes  ($2,250 ) - Bourke Walgett School of Distance Ed P& C, BOURKE: NASCAR Dreaming will be facilitating children's  environmental education and cultural appreciation project through the medium of art. The  project will be facilitated at Carinda primary and the School of Air commencing Mid April and completing the project in December 2009. Project contact:

BREWARRINA Local Govt Area ($2,000)

NSW Indigenous Art Prize ($2,000) - Brewarrina Shire Council, BREWARRINA: The exhibition of finalist art works for the 2008 Parliament of NSW Indigenous Art Prize will tour regional NSW in 2009 and the works will be shown at Brewarrina Visitor Information & Cultural Centre between 17th August and 11th October. Funding to bring the tour to Brewarrina has been sought and approved by Museums and Galleries NSW ($7,500) however a shortfall of $3,000 exists to cover the cost of hosting the exhibition to provide the western region of NSW access to this highly regarded Indigenous exhibition. COONAMBLE Local Govt Area ($4,650)

Tim Winters Art Project 2009  ($1,500) - Two eight two eight, GULARGAMBONE: A three day workshop - Printing & Making Artist's Books - introducing participants to  simple linocutting techniques and colour printing by hand, designing and making an 'Artists Book'. Project contact:

Kristina Olsen Performance  ($750) - Two eight two eight, GULARGAMBONE: Kristina Olsen, international touring multi-instrumentalist / composer from the USA will perform one concert at 7.30pm on the 9th May and hold a two hour workshop the following day , 10th May, starting at 10.00am. This will be the first international act the venue has hosted and a rare opportunity for the community to see a quality artist without having to travel to a larger centre. Project contact:

Critical Stages- 'No Chance in Hell' ($1,000) - Coonamble Street's Ahead Committee, COONAMBLE: a presentation of comedy theatre toured by Critical Stages. The performance will be held at a local venue in Coonamble in August 2009. Project contact:

Creative Garden Art ($500) - Coonamble Garden Club, COONAMBLE: a mosaic workshop to be run by Kaylene (Kookie) Atkins at Coonamble in September. Project contact:

Moorambilla Choir Workshops ($900) - Coonamble Rural Transaction Centre, COONAMBLE: The project will provide artists fees and transport to enable the community choir in Coonamble to rehearse with Warren choir under the guidance of their qualified and skillful musical director. The project aims to encourage the partnership of Coonamble and the neighboring towns to rehearse and perform as a combined regional choir which will then perform at the Moorambilla choral festival in September 2009. COBAR Local Govt Area ($3,624)

In the Bin short film making & festival ($2,500 ) -  Cobar Shire Council, COBAR: In the Bin will run three days of workshops for school students to learn about film making, they will then make their own films  on a topic of their choice and hold a short film festival showing their works plus other short films from around Australia. Project contact:

Musica Viva – Papalote ($1,124) -  Cobar Arts Council, COBAR: Cobar Art's Council will bring Musica Viva's Papalote music ensemble to Cobar in May 2009. The performers' music blends the culture of three continents with traditional instruments from all over America in their repertoire. Project contact:

WALGETT Local Govt Area ($1,500)

Fragile Black Heart ($900) -  Australian Opal Centre, LIGHTNING RIDGE: Launching the 2009 Lightning Ridge Easter Festival, Lightning Ridge Opal & Fossil Centre will host 'Fragile Black Heart', an exhibition by award winning photographer Lucy Di Paulo. It will feature  photographs and a short film, and pays homage to Lucy's late mother, a former resident, and the unique characters of the opal mining community. Project contact:

Concert by Papalote ($600) - L/Ridge & Region Transcultural Community Council Inc, LIGHTNING RIDGE: A Latin American music Concert toured by Musica Viva Countrywide by Papalote Band  to be held on the 8th May in Lightning Ridge Bowling Club Auditorium. Project contact:

Three Rivers Project ($1,500) Centacare Wilcannia Forbes, BOURKE: Local artist Sean Cassidy will spend two months working across the towns of Bourke and Brewarrina engaging local Indigenous artists to join community members in art workshops. Participants with particular talent will be identified and further supported to take on a leadership role. Project contact:

Scrap to Sculpture ($2,000) Murrawari Aboriginal Corporation, ENNGONIA: Three two-day workshops using recycled materials to create sculptures.  Project contact: Kerri Mooring

Yaamma Street Parade Project ($1,500) Yaamma Steering Committee, BOURKE: Four day workshop to create banners and hand held figures to be used in the 2008 Yaamma festival street parade. Project contact:

I am Jack ( $600) Cobar Public School P&C Association, COBAR: Assistance towards bringing Monkey Baa Theatre to Cobar to present 'I am Jack' which addresses the issues of bullying targeting audiences between 7 and 12 years of age. Project contact:    

In the Bin Film Festival ($1,500)  Cobar Shire Council, COBAR:  Short Film Festival and education program to be held and presented in Cobar Shire in collaboration with the Cobar Arts Council. Project contact: 

Emerging Artist Professional Development Workshop ($500) - Outback Arts, COBAR: A professional development workshop for emerging artists in Cobar with Cath Fogarty from Museums NSW.  The workshop will focus on the 'Business of Art' and will include skills of developing a CV and exhibition proposals, exhibition opportunities and creative marketing. The Country Arts Support Program is administered annually through Outback Arts for the far west region.  In 2006 19 applications from the region were received.  RADO consulted with 17 potential applicants.  Panelists: Lesly Ryan, Barbara Moritz, Marilyn Collins, Colleen Graham (independent).  Assessment meeting: 27/2/06, Coonamble.

"Bogan Booty Shake" Dance Workshop ($1660) – Nyngan Arts Council, NYNGAN: Annual project allowing dance enthusiasts from town and surrounding district access to dance classes. Project contact: Angie White

BOURKE Local Govt Area ($2,250 total)

Indigenous Dance Group ($1500) – Ngadrri Ngalli Way Inc (Bourke Family Support), BOURKE: series of traditional Indigenous Dance Workshops with local dancers and community to support and develop a professional performance at Bourke's annual Indigenous Cultural Festival, Yaamma.  Project contact: Dot Martin

"Lonely Horses" Workshops & Tour ($750) – Bourke Arts Council, BOURKE - community workshops with Tonchi Mcintosh, Andrew Hull and Mick Daley (The Re'mains") on song, poetry & theatre using local histories at Nymagee followed by a 'one horse' town tour through remote far west NSW communities, culminating in a performance of the developed works at Nymagee's  "Outback Music Festival".  Project contact: Andrew Hull

Drumming in Bre ($1660) – Brewarrina Shire Council, BREWARRINA: drumming workshops with Bre youth using drums produced within ArtStart 2005 (culminating in a community performance by participants).  Project contact: Petra Eder

Femmes Fatales ($750) – Mallee Hen Co-op, NYMAGEE: "Femme Fatales" Performance/workshops in a diverse original music experience promoting women and youth culture at the 2006 Nymagee Outback  Music Festival. Project contact: Jay Dunne

Ngiyampaa Workshops & Performance ($1000) – Mount Grenfell Historic Site Board of Management, COBAR: A 3 Day traditional dance workshop during NAIDOC week with professional traditional group "Thullii Dreamtime Performers" and local Ngiyampaa Aboriginal people to culminate in a performance at 2nd Anniversary celebration of the hand-back of the Mount Grenfell Historic Site to its Ngiyampaa Aboriginal Owners (July 17th).  Project contact: Gwen Troutman

Waste 2 Art ($1500) – Lightning Ridge Arts & Crafts Council, LIGHTNING RIDGE: A series of workshops exposing the community at large to a variety of art mediums and techniques related to 'found' and 'waste' materials with a view toward producing works for entrance in the 2006 Waste 2 Art competition.  Project contact -

"My Warren" ($1000) – Warren Shire Council, WARREN: A project targeting young people which involves an art competition to produce a design which represents what Warren means to me, an associated community art workshop, and the transformation of winning designs by a professional graphic designer for public display. “Bogan River Dance Jumble” ($2,000) – Nyngan Arts Council, NYNGAN: Three day dance workshop, catering to all ages of dance enthusiasts resulting in a performance at the end of the workshops to be held at the Palais Theatre. The workshops will be facilitated by regional and city tutors and 2 student teachers. Dance steps taught will be ballet, tap and jazz and hip hop. Project Contact – Angie White

“Drumming in Bre” workshops ($1,570) – Brewarrina Shire Council for Brewarrina Youth Centre, BREWARRINA: As a part of Youth Week 2005 Brewarrina Youth Centre will host drumming workshops involving young people, Brewarrina Men's Group, and Ourgunyah Women's Refugee Group.  “Four on the Floor, Legs on the Wall” performance ($1,000) – Coonamble Shire Council for Streets Ahead, COONAMBLE: The Streets Ahead Committee will bring a young vibrant physical theatre group to Coonamble to present workshops to interested students and perform live for the wider community.  Project Contact – John Griffiths

“Coonamble Youth’s 150th Birthday Mural” ($600) – Murdi Paaki Regional Enterprises, COONAMBLE: The youth of Coonamble would like to present a gift of mural to the town for their 150th birthday. The mural will incorporate Indigenous and non Indigenous artists and youth bringing together both cultures to celebrate their rural and remote community through the gift of art. “Sing Sesqui Centenary Coonamble” musical commission ($2,650) – Coonamble Shire Council for Streets Ahead, COONAMBLE: Paul Jarman in community consultation will write a choral piece to commemorate the Sesqui Centenary of the town of Coonamble. This piece will be performed (with the support of visual display) by the Leichardt Espresso Chorus and community members at the Sing Sesqui Centenary Coonamble concert and dinner. “Co-Opera Opera” performance ($1,000) – Walgett & District Tourist Association, WALGETT: This project brings a professional opera company to Walgett, a remote area where cultural activities are relatively few and far between. Project Contact – Marilyn Collins

“Her Story” visual arts project ($450) – Yawarra Meamei Women’s Group Inc., LIGHTNING RIDGE: To employ a local Aboriginal artist who will work with women who attend our women's support group to produce a painting that tells their individual stories. The finished painting will be placed in a prominent location for all the community to appreciate and comment. Project Contact – Ollie Chiu

“Co-Opera Die Fledermaus” opera performance ($765) – Warren Arts Council, WARREN: An open air picnic style event featuring Co-opera's production of J Strauss Die Fledermaus - Project Contact – Melissa Irving

“Railway Street Theatre Company’s Last Five Years” theatre performance ($840) – Warren Arts Council, WARREN: An evening performance in a small, isolated, rural hall of the Railway Street Theatre Company's play The Last Five Years. Project Contact – Audrey Weston

“Kids Circus Expo” workshops ($2,000) – Central West Family Support: 4 day workshop for children of Murrin Bridge and 3 trainers from the Flying Fruit Fly Circus covering skills in juggling, hoops, balancing and general showmanship. This builds in the success of the previous workshop held during the Heart of NSW Festival 2004.Expanding experience from previous workshop held during the Heart of NSW Festival October 2004. “Macquarie Marsh Country Music Concert” ($1,000) – Macquarie Marshes, MACQUARIE MARSHES: Col Finley camped in the Macquarie Marshes and wrote a song in memory of Sarah Thornton. It was released at a successful marsh concert in 2000. Surplus funds donated to Cancer Research. Col and the community have asked for another concert. It will be run as the same as last one.
