his project involves a
partnership with James Wilson Miller- Curator of Koori
Culture and History. Through his role at the PHM he will
research, collate and create a body of reference material
documenting the traditional, historical and customary forms
of art practice and examples of creative expression of the
Indigenous nations of our Far West region.
This process will start with a week long tour of the
region by Mr. Miller accompanied by S, Newstead which will
involve meeting with relevant organisations and individuals
as a way to appropriately and respectfully engage with these
communities and seek permission to access these materials.
After this tour Mr. Miller will conduct research
accessing the PHM archives and through any other means he
feels necessary. Materials gathered will be presented to
Outback Arts which will then be made available as a resource
material for individuals and groups in our region. This
resource will be accessible to the wider community (where
culturally appropriate) via the Living Arts and Culture
website. This material will also serve as a cultural tool
and source of inspiration for practicing artists, educators,
schools and community groups.
Artist Liz O’Reilly will provide the regions first
introduction to this material by holding printmaking
workshops around our 6 shires during a 1 week period. The
participants will be invited use this reference material to
inspire and inform the artworks they will create.
